Science Workshops (2000 to 2007)

Introductory Science Workshops for Monastic Scholars

The Science Workshops (2000-2007) was an historic program and represented the first formal teachings of science in the history of Tibetan Buddhism. In 2000, a group of 50 monk-scholars with a deep understanding of Buddhist philosophy, representing dozens of monasteries and all of Tibet’s Buddhist traditions, were selected to participate in the first 4-week science workshop held at Sera Monastery. Intensive annual workshops were identified as a way to introduce monks to science without disrupting their regular philosophical studies. Nine 4-week intensive science workshops were successfully implemented between 2000 and 2007. A major outcome of these workshops was an overwhelming demand for science education within the monastic institutions.
