The heart of education in the Tibetan Buddhist community is its monasteries and nunneries, where about 500 monastic graduates lead the academic studies of more than 39,000 monks and 4,000 nuns in India, Nepal, and Bhutan. Graduates from these traditions play an influential role in the nearly 200,000-person, Tibetan-in-exile community that lives in India, Nepal, and Bhutan, and represent Tibetan Buddhism globally. These monastics undergo a rigorous course of study that includes philosophy, logic, and debate. Many become excellent philosophers, thinkers, and debaters, as well as skillful contemplatives with deep meditative experiences and insights. This program seeks to involve nuns and monks from all the major Tibetan Buddhist schools in India, Nepal, and Bhutan.
